Skin care is very important aspect of our day to day live. Today our skin bears the wrath of pollution, dust, sun, extreme weather conditions etc. Even the makeup we wear can damage the skin. While we take care of our body, the skin often is left out. By skin we do not only mean the face but the hands and feet as well. These are the most exposed skin parts and therefore need to be cared for. In winters the skin becomes dry causing a lot of itch and irritation. Apart from them certain conditions like kidney or liver disease, allergies and dermatitis can also cause itchy skin. Itchy skin often leads to scratching the irritating part roughly which can cause the skin to become red as well. Dry skin can also be caused by ageing as the skin starts to lose its moisture over a period of time.

Winters are particularly harsh on the skin. Freezing temperatures can leave your skin itchy, flaky and dry. It is critical to therefore protect your skin from the harsh winters by using a proper skin care routine, warm clothes, gloves for hands and socks for the feet. Fortify your home

By this we really mean that you should add humidity to your house. Portable humidifiers will be great for your skin as well as scalp and help prevent dry skin. If you do not already have it, buy a humidifier to protect yourself from the winter itch.

Sunscreen

It’s a myth that sunscreens are only to be used in summers. It is a great way to protect your skin during winters as well. If you would be frequently heading out, apply a sunscreen with at least SPF 30. It will protect you from the harmful UV rays of the sun which can also cause cancer.

Moisturizer

Moisturizer is your skin’s best friend during winters. Moisturizer will lend your skin with the much needed humidity that will keep your skin protected during winters. Moisturizers are good for dry hands and feet as well. They lock the moisturizer of the skin so that it does not flake off or get cracked.

Avoid hot showers

However tempting it may be but avoid hot shower baths as it will do more damage to your skin. You may find it effective against winters but hot water will only strip your skin of its natural oils and make it drier. The hotter the water the more damage it will create. Also avoiding any products containing alcohol is also advised. Warm water with moisturizing soap will be very effective for fighting of dry skin in winters.

Gloves

They may seem simple piece of clothing but they protect your hands. Often the hands are left out in the cold and this can cause damage to the skin on our hands. Dry hands can also cause scaling and itching skin. It’s best to protect your hands by wearing gloves.

Comfortable Clothing

This winter instead of fashion look for skin comfort. Loose cotton fabrics are a great idea. It will help your skin breathe and will lessen the irritation on your skin due to itchy clothes and woolens.

Home Remedies for Dry Skin during winters

Sometimes the best moisturizer for dry skin can be found by mixing some ingredients commonly found in your kitchen. This eliminates the risk of applying some chemical based moisturizer and won’t have any side effects as well. However you need to check your allergies and decide the best one for you.

Olive Oil

One of the best natural moisturizer, a little dab of Olive oil on the skin can soothe the itching and flaking.

Milk Cream

Another great remedy is milk cream. Milk cream is not only an excellent moisturizer; it also helps in maintaining the PH levels of the skin.

Honey

The sweetest ingredient is a dry skin savior too. It is loaded with antioxidants and can enrich the skin in no time. Applying honey regularly will protect the skin’s moisturizer.
